Outdoor Fitness in LA: Fun Summer Workouts

If you haven’t yet started your summer workout regimen, don’t fret. Swimsuit season is just getting started, and there are plenty of places in Los Angeles to sculpt, tone and tan while also getting outside to experience the gorgeous beach season weather we’ve been waiting for since last October. These are some of the best summer workouts in Los Angeles.

Bridge to Nowhere Hike: This 10-mile hike through the Angeles National Forest follows the San Gabriel River, in which hikers can cool off at many points along the trail. The intermediate level trek takes several hours and ends at the “bridge to nowhere,” a road project that was started in 1936 and never finished. Hikers can soak their feet under the bridge and take a dip in the river’s deep swimming holes. Bungee jumping from the bridge is also available through

Islands Surf Camp: Surfing is a fundamental component of summer in Los Angeles, and it’s also an amazing workout for the arms, legs, back and butt. Perfect your body and your surf skills simultaneously by taking a class at Islands Surf Camp. The instructors are all accomplished surfers, and they’ll teach you to hang ten with grace and style. Private and group lessons are available on beaches from the South Bay to Malibu.

Runyon Canyon Yoga:
Surplus yoga is available in Los Angeles year round, but during the summer, it’s especially important to be stretching your limbs to their longest and leanest proportions. Runyon Canyon’s donation based yoga program features four daily classes, so you can get outside and perfect your tree pose. Hike the canyon after class for an extra oomph to your workout.

Kayak Fitness Program: Paddling creates upper body strength and is a fantastic aerobic and cardiovascular workout. Get out on the waters of Lake Balboa with the L.A. Parks’ Kayaking Fitness Program. The park department requires that kayakers first pass an orientation program, which then allows the purchase of a pass good for 25 kayak rentals throughout the summer.

Trapeze School: Indulge your circus performer fantasies and sculpt your biceps by taking a class at Trapeze School. This beachside program is located at the circus hoops just south of the Santa Monica Pier. Master the flying trapeze, get wrapped up in an aerial silks class or twist, flip and spin in trampoline class. Children and beginners are welcome.
