The AIDAaura is a popular floating resort. The waters are crowded with sea-worthy vessels, so to make planning easier, we've done all the prep work for a cruise vacation. As part of a Huffington Post Travel series on cruise ships, here is a tip sheet offering all the key information one could ever need to know about the AIDAaura.
DestinationThe AIDAaura sails to such destinations as North America, Italy, Malta, Crete, Spain, Turkey, Russia and the Caribbean on cruises that typically last from seven to 15 days.
Elegant ShipThe AIDAaura is a midsize ship at 665 feet long and 92 feet wide. It can carry about 1,300 passengers and a crew of about 400. It was the third ship built for AIDA Cruises, a German company, and the vessel is the identical twin of the AIDAvita liner. The ship is popular with fun-loving and active Germans and German-speaking Europeans who are looking for a casual atmosphere.
Special FeaturesThe AIDAaura has three restaurants, five bars, a spa, a theater, a disco,a fitness center, a putting green, a golf simulator and a pool deck designed to look like a beach, with a swimming pool ringed by palm trees.
AccommodationsThe AIDAaura boasts 633 bright, well-appointed staterooms whose sizes are typical for the cruise ship industry. Most of the staterooms are standard inside and outside cabins, with a few balcony rooms and suites. All staterooms are equipped with a shower, telephone, hair dryer and TV.
CostFares vary, depending on such factors as itinerary, cabin selection and date of travel. On the AIDAaura, passengers can experience such itineraries as a 10-day North American cruise for about $1,567 per person in an inside cabin and a 15-day transatlantic journey for about $4,992 per person in an ocean-view stateroom.
Shore ExcursionsAIDAaura passengers have several shore excursion options. On Grand Cayman island, cruisers can go snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, horseback riding, or they can spend their on-shore hours on shopping trips or visits to the island's pristine beaches. Passengers can visit the Stingray City Sandbar or experience the Grand Cayman Barrier Reef.
Dining ExperiencePassengers on the AIDAaura can choose from the Calypso and Market restaurants, which serve dishes buffet style nearly around the clock. Although the ship has a casual, laid-back vibe, it has one restaurant with waiter and sommelier service -- the Maritime. Other options include the Calypso Terraces outdoor cafe and room service. Steak, fresh breads, fruits, cheeses, smoked salmon, caviar and a fine selection of wine are just some of the culinary options available to cruisers.
Maiden VoyageThe AIDAaura made its maiden voyage in April 2003. It was built exclusively for AIDA Cruises as a passenger liner by the German firm Aker MTW.
