Cook Stabs Co-Workers With A Kitchen Knife At China Bowl In Elk Grove

Chinese Restaurant Cook Stabs Co-Workers With A Kitchen Knife

A cook at a Chinese restaurant in Elk Grove is in custody after allegedly stabbing two coworkers with a kitchen knife during an altercation Monday afternoon.

Xiubin Mei, 60, of Chicago is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Mei's attack followed a dispute with two other workers at the China Bowl restaurant on Turner Ave, police told the Daily Herald. Two victims, 51-year-old Hui Yi Li of Chicago and 43-year-old Rui Zhong of Darien, were treated at a hospital and released, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Police say they were stabbed several times.

A language barrier posed a problem with the initial police and paramedic response, and a Mandarin translator was called in, Elk Grove Village Fire Chief Bill Balling told the Daily Herald.

Mei also sustained injuries during the fight, though he suffered more bruises than cuts, Balling said.
