The annual adventure in desert living and self-reliance that is the Burning Man festival starts today in Nevada, as thousands upon thousands drive to the temporary town of Black Rock City for a week of art and self-expression that culminates in the burning of a giant figure made of sticks. The festival isn't for everyone, but that's exactly the point. Black Rock City is part libertine, part libertarian and all-encompassingly bizarre.
The massive following the 25-year-old festival has cultivated is proof there's fun to be had in the desert with 50,000 other free spirits (many of whom are undergoing self-inflicted pharmaceutical testing). Further proof can be found in these clips from the past few years.
