With his adaptation of Maurice Sendak's "Where The Wild Things Are" and his recent robot love story, "I'm Here," Spike Jonze has been on a creative streak. Now he has released collaborative animated short with fashion designer, Olympia Le-Tan. "Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side)," a short narrative made exclusively for Nowness, using stop-motion animation and 3,000 pieces of felt that were painstakingly hand-made by Le-Tan.
Le-Tan, known for her embroidered handbags, creates enchanting characters out of felt, which Jonze and co-director, Simon Cahn weave into a story of love that transcends death and adversity. The short was tirelessly filmed day and night in Paris' famed bookstore, Shakespeare and Company. "It's such a beautiful and romantic place,” Le-Tan told Nowness. "The perfect setting for our story!”
