Thanksgiving In Delaware: A MapQuest Guide

Thanksgiving in Delaware is a time for gathering with family and loved ones, expressing gratitude and, of course, eating. As part of TurkeyQuest -- a MapQuest guide to Thanksgiving events, featuring everything from parades to holiday sales to activities for families -- here are two of the best ways to experience Thanksgiving in Delaware and one opportunity to give back to others.

Wilmington Jaycees Christmas Parade

Traditionally held on Black Friday, the Wilmington Jaycees Christmas Parade now takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so families can hit the sales and still watch as the classic cars, beauty queens and high-school marching bands usher in the holiday season. Parade watchers set up chairs along the Market Street Mall from Fourth Street to Rodney Square at 3 p.m. for the festivities. Afterward, participants can get some holiday shopping done at the many shops downtown.

Newark Turkey Trot

Delawareans get their run on the Sunday before Thanksgiving at the Newark Turkey Trot in Norma B. Handloff Park. The Trot, which is Delaware's second-oldest consecutively run race, includes a 10K starting at 9 a.m. followed by a 5K Run and Walk at 10:15 a.m. Registration is $20 ($25 the day before and the day of the race). Prizes are awarded for age-division winners and male and female overall winners.

Volunteer: DART First State's Annual "Stuff-The-Bus" Charity Food Drive

The Delaware Transit Authority does its part to help Delawareans in need with the annual DART First State's "Stuff-the-Bus" Charity Food Drive, and support from the public can help make the holiday season a little cheerier. Donate food to fill a DART bus at one of the events throughout early November in Wilmington, Milford and Dover. Collected items go to the Food Bank of Delaware.
