Thanksgiving In Nebraska: A MapQuest Guide

Thanksgiving in Nebraska is a time for gathering with family and loved ones, expressing gratitude and, of course, eating. As part of TurkeyQuest -- a MapQuest guide to Thanksgiving events, featuring everything from parades to holiday sales to activities for families -- here are two of the best ways to experience Thanksgiving in Nebraska and one opportunity to give back to others.

Exploring With Lewis & Clark

Nebraska's tourism bureau features "Exploring With Lewis & Clark" on its "Open Road Adventures" list of self-guided historical road tours. The tour is heavy on Native American culture, an appropriate way to pay homage to the spirit of the very first Thanksgiving. Sites along the tour, which begins at the Winnebago Indian Reservation about 80 miles north of Omaha in northeast Nebraska, include the Winnebago Cultural Center and Museum, the Honoring-The-Clans Sculpture Garden and the Ponca Earthlodge/Ponca Tribal Museum. The Visit Nebraska website includes detailed directions for this 200-mile scenic tour.

Frozen Turkey Trot

The Hastings Family YMCA of south-central Nebraska sponsors its annual Frozen Turkey Trot in mid-November. The event is a 5K run/walk around Lake Hastings -- with a special twist. The "Family Edition" of the contest requires families to carry a frozen turkey with them throughout the course, and pick up other Thanksgiving feast items as they make their way around the lake. It's a test of teamwork and a fun way to bond with kinfolk. The registration fee costs about $40.

1220 W. 18th St., Hastings, NE 68901

Volunteer: People's City Mission

People's City Mission has been serving the Lincoln, Nebraska, community for more than 100 years, aiding impoverished and homeless people. Volunteers are needed every Thanksgiving season for food-basket registration and food-basket giveaways, as well as the preparation and serving of the annual Thanksgiving meal. Families, church groups, schools and workplaces are encouraged to participate.
