Latino Celebrity Philanthropists: Lending A Hand To Help Their Communities

Latino Celebrities Embrace Humanitarian Causes

Shakira's recent award from the Latin Recording Academy as 2011 Person Of The Year honored her musical talent as well as her philanthropic work. But the Colombian singing star isn't alone in her charitable work. Celebrities from all over Latin America are embracing philanthropic causes and lending a hand in their communities.

Many of these stars grew up during tumultuous times in their native countries. Now, they're using their fame and good fortune to help others. The singer Juanes, for instance, is helping children injured during civil strife. Actress Rosario Dawson seeks to empower Latino youth through the voter-registration organization Voto Latino. These and others stars have founded their own organizations, helping to educate underprivileged children, raising money for AIDS awareness and supporting communities affected by natural disasters.
