Chicagoans relying on the CTA Red and Purple Lines to commute home during Monday's rush hour were treated to an evening filled with service interruptions when three people barricaded themselves in an Uptown building after federal agents attempted to question them about a firearms arrest.
The result was a police standoff that lasted over six hours, not only snarling two of the city's train lines but also essentially locking down the immediate area near the 4600 block of North Broadway Street.
The standoff began shortly after 4:15 p.m. when a federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives task force, in conjunction with Chicago police, arrested one man in a firearms investigation, NBC Chicago reports. When police attempted to continue their investigation by questioning others inside 4639 N. Broadway St., the suspects barricaded themselves inside. Around 8 p.m., SWAT teams stormed the building, but the standoff continued.
The CTA proceeded to shut down both the Red Line between the Addison and Berwyn stops and the Purple Line Express as they warned passengers of "police activity" at the Wilson Red Line stop, according to WBEZ. Shuttle buses transported Red Line passengers along the shut-down route.
Residents in the area were warned by the police throughout the standoff to stay inside their homes, away from windows, Uptown Update reported. The message was reportedly being passed along, at least at one point, by "reverse 911 calls."
Full service on the trains was not restored and community warnings were not called off until after 10 p.m., after the three individuals inside the building surrendered peacefully, the Chicago Tribune reports. No injuries were reported.
The Tribune reported Tuesday that at least three guns, one of which was a rifle with a scope, and a bulletproof vest were recovered from the building where the suspects barricaded themselves. The group, reportedly from South Bend, Indiana, was being sought out for questioning in connection with the Nov. 18 shooting death of 31-year-old Dietrich Perkins. No charges have been filed against the group.
