Tony Hawk Donates $10,000 To San Francisco Skatepark (PHOTOS)

Last week, famed skateboarder Tony Hawk kept skating in San Francisco alive with a $10,000 donation to the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to support the construction of the new SOMA West Skate Plaza at Mission Street and Duboce.

The park is part of the SOMA West Improvement Projects. According to the Department of Public Works, the project had stalled due to lack of funding, and Hawk's donation gave it a much needed shot in the arm. Construction is set to begin this spring and be completed by fall.

The park is being designed by New Line Skateparks -- one of the world's leading design and construction firms specializing in skateparks. According to New Line, the park was designed to be a reflection of epic San Francisco skate spots, especially Justin Herman Plaza.

The Recreation and Parks Department celebrated the donation on Friday with an event featuring a performance by local celebrity skateboarder and World Cup winner Steve Caballero.
