Gurmeet Singh Denies Rape Allegation, Tells NYPD He Often Picks Up Prostitutes

Cabbie Denies Raping Passenger, Uses Prostitution Excuse

The cab driver who was arrested for allegedly raping a female passenger at knifepoint in his taxi on Monday told police that he often has sex with prostitutes.

As police arrested 40-year old Gurmeet Singh, the driver said:

I did not rape anybody. Sometimes I pick up women, call girls, off the street and have sex with them.

He went on to deny any wrongdoing and was quoted as saying to police, "I never had sex in the back of the cab...I don't know how my DNA got in her vagina."

Singh is being accused of raping a 26-year old woman in May of last year. The unidentified victim told police she had been out drinking to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at popular music venue, Public Assembly in Williamsburg. As the night ended, the woman hailed a cab to take her back home to Manhattan.

After briefly falling asleep in the cab, the woman says she awoke to find herself only a few blocks away from the venue, where Singh allegedly bound her wrists together and raped her at knifepoint.

Investigators were able to connect a cab plate number identified from a September incident when a woman was raped in Harlem and DNA evidence recovered from the incident in May to eventually track down Singh's identity.

Police arrested Singh, the father of two children, and charged him with rape, robbery, assault, menacing and sex abuse.

Singh was ordered held on $1 million bail.
