It was a big Sunday in Pac-12 land.
After star dual-threat quarterback Devin Fuller announced that he had committed to UCLA, five-star lineman Arik Armstead declared that he was headed to Oregon to play for Chip Kelly.
The recruitment of Armstead remained wide open to the very end as coaches at major programs, including USC, Cal, Auburn, Washington and Notre Dame, actively pursued the star lineman.
One of the top defensive linemen in the Class of 2012, the 6-8, 280-pounder plans to enroll in March and will be able to participate in spring practice.
The standout from Pleasant Grove High School (Elk Grove, Calif.), who plans on playing basketball in Eugene as well, was projected by some recruiting services to be an ideal offensive lineman at the next level. However, Armstead prefers to play defensive end, a position he played during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Armstead was set on playing defense, and the Ducks prefer him there as well.
With Armstead in the fold in Eugene, many Oregon fans are hoping that Kelly will now land top safety Shaq Thompson, who is very close with the lineman. Certainly pairing Thompson with Armstead would be huge for the program, especially after it was thought that Kelly was on his way to the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers just a week ago.
