Shakira Honored In France With The 'Chevalier, De L'Order des Arts et des Lettres' Award (PHOTOS)

Shakira was honored this past weekend in France with the 'Chevalier De L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' medal, an award which recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the arts and literature.

The first Colombian to receive this recognition, Shakira was was presented with the honor and medal by French Minister of Culture Frederic Mitterand.

Over the weekend, the singer opened the French NRJ Music Awards in Cannes where she performed her hit new song 'Je l'aime a mourir' ( 'La Quiero A Morir' ), which is sung half in Spanish and half in French. The single debuted as #1 on the French Single charts.

"I am so humbled to receive this honour in a country like France that has shared an important cultural legacy with the rest of the world," she said according to BBC News.

Shakira was honored alongside Justin Bieber who received the version of the award presented to males. Other artists who have previously been honored with the 'Chevalier, De L'Order des Arts et des Lettres' include poet T.S. Elliot, director Clint Eastwood and actor George Clooney.

It's been quite a season for the Colombian pop-singer.

In just the last three months, Shakira was immortalized on The Hollywood Walk of Fame and honored as the recipient of the "2011 Person of the Year Award" by the Latin Recording Academyin recognition for her artistic and philanthropic contributions around the world.
