Volkswagen Star Wars Super Bowl Commercial Dubbed 'Dog Strikes Back' (VIDEO)

Volkswagen's Star Wars Super Bowl Ad Builds On Last Year's Popular Commercial

Volkswagen's 2011 Super Bowl commercial featuring a young boy imitating Darth Vader won the heart of America and ultimately went viral. This year Volkswagen is hoping to build on the success of that ad by staying with the Star Wars theme but featuring a new protagonist: an overweight dog. The commercial, which was teased earlier in the month by a video featuring a choir of dogs barking "The Imperial March," appears to be a straight forward advertisement at first, with the dog ultimately losing weight and chasing after a prized Volkswagen Beetle, but then it takes on a new dimension by showing Star Wars character watching and critiquing the commercial in a space-age bar after it's finished. Sure enough, Darth Vader gets a Super Bowl comeo for the second year in a row.

For years, viewers have tuned into the NFL's Super Bowl as much to see what the advertisers roll out as how the two teams vying for the sport's top prize perform. This year is no different. Each time that NBC cuts away from Super Bowl XLVI between the New York Giants and New England Patriots a hush will come over most Super Bowl parties as everyone -- and not just the diehard sports fans with a rooting (or betting) interest -- focuses entirely on the ads.

While iconic Super Bowl commercials like Apple's '1984' and Coke's ad starring Mean Joe Greene will be remembered so many more are soon forgotten or, even worse, ridiculed as super fails.
