FDNY Finds Body Of Man In Abandoned Subway Station Room

After Extinguishing Subway Blaze, Firefighters Find Body

A homeless man was found dead inside an abandoned room in an Upper East Side subway station Sunday, CBS reports.

FDNY responded to a 911 call at about 9PM regarding a fire inside the station at 63rd Street and Lexington.

When they arrived they found smoke coming from a communications room 150 feet away from the subway platform. Inside they discovered the body of an unidentified, middle-aged man who had apparently turned the space into his living quarters, complete with a toaster and a hot plate, The Daily News reports.

The cause of the fire is still unknown although a police source tells The News, "The fire was not set through the MTA but it was started through the individual who is now deceased." Officials also said the blaze was likely an accident.

The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of the man's death.

The situation caused minor delays along the F line.

The incident calls to mind a 2010 report that showed more than 1000 homeless people lived in the city's subways. The 2000 documentary "Dark Days" documented the lives of these subterranean squatters:
