Whether it was a romantic outing for lovebirds or an excuse for single girls to stare at Channing Tatum, "The Vow" brought in a whopping $11.6 million on Valentine's Day.
Tuesday's box office numbers have made "The Vow" the best midweek Valentine's Day gross in history; "Hitch," with Will Smith and Kevin James, was the previous record holder, earning $7.5 million in 2005.
The tale of newlyweds Leo and Paige (played by Tatum and Rachel McAdams) attempting to rebuild their love after an accident leaves Paige with amnesia could have a romantic allure for a number of reasons, one being that the film is based on a true story. Or it could have something to do with the fact that "girls who look like Rachel McAdams, even only slightly and in a certain light, are dangerous," according to Todd, Lindsay's ex-boyfriend. "They'll convince you of all sorts of impossibilities: like that love still exists."
And while The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that Tatum "acts as if he has no memory of learning his lines... He seems perpetually short of breath in 'The Vow,' while moving his lips so little when uttering banalities, he might be studying ventriloquism," it also added that "none of this will matter to those who find Tatum dreamy."
