New York Fashion Week Fall 2012: The Craziest And Coolest Beauty Trends

Fashion Week's Craziest And Coolest Beauty Trends

At the fall 2012 shows, hair and makeup ran the gamut from full-throttle all the way to wash-and-go -- with very little in between. The looks manifested in "Avatar"-inspired eyeshadow, big, teased hair and traditional (as well as some less expected) takes on wearing red. Then there was the beauty look that could only be called "The Emperor's New Makeup." As in the models weren't wearing a lick of it (or at least they looked like they weren't). Was it minimal effort on the parts of the makeup artists or is this underwhelming (albeit easy to mimic at home) approach the new face of makeup? We saw the hair equivalent at shows like Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone with downplayed, air-dried styles that incorporated a bit of natural wave, and some that were even meant to look a few days old.

"Every season we try to interpret another way of doing kind of natural, kind of easy, sort of cool hair," Stylist Guido Palau said backstage at Alexander Wang. "Meaning, the girls never look better than when they walk into the fitting. I try to enhance that look." Paul Hanlon, who did the Grunge-esque hair at Altuzarra, echoed the same sentiment: "It's meant to look like very real hair. We're going for easy, effortless. Very believable. Think Kate Moss when she gets papped. Less is more today." That's a message we can get behind.
