Flamengo's Deivid de Souza may never live down the golden opportunity he squandered in Friday's match against Vasco da Gama in the semifinals of the Rio de Janeiro tournament Guanabara Cup. In the 35th minute with the score tied, 1-1, Souza was in the right place at the right time as he received a pass directly in front of an empty net.
Slowing his run, Deivid tried tapping the ball into the goal, but it bounced off the post and was quickly cleared by a Vasco defender. The embarrassed Deivid immediately fell on his stomach inside the goal and briefly stayed on the ground while the ball was still in play.
In the 78th minute, Vasco scored the game-winning goal to advance to the final.
After the loss, Deivid admitted that even his 5-year-old son would have scored on that shot.
As Dirty Tackle points out, there was another soccer player who challenged Souza with a miserable miss of his own just hours earlier. Here are several other horrendous soccer misses.
