Seth Rogen Rips Into Chris Brown, Mel Gibson At '2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards' (VIDEO)

Seth Rogen Rips Chris Brown At 'Independent Spirit Awards'

With this year's crop of Oscar contenders coming mostly from the world of independent films, the "Film Independent Spirit Awards" (Sat., 10 p.m. EST on IFC) felt more like a pre-Academy Awards than in any year prior. That said, Seth Rogen made sure it didn't feel too much like an Oscars ceremony from the very beginning. In his opening monologue, he embraced the lighter atmosphere with some cutting material that would have likely never made it to air on the big show Sunday night.

"Without awards season, we wouldn't know what a horrible bigot Brett Ratner is," Rogen said of the original Oscars director. Ratner was removed after making a homophobic comment.

"I honestly bet, though, that Brett Ratner really wishes that he was organizing the Grammys, because they seem much more forgiving than the Oscars," Rogen continued. "You say a few hateful things, they don't let you within 100 yards of the Oscars. You can literally beat the s**t out of a nominee, they ask you to perform twice at the Grammys."

The target of his words, Chris Brown, wasn't in attendance, nor was Rihanna, or a later target of Rogen's skewering humor. In talking about the film "Drive," Rogen said, "That movie made Jews so scary, I thought Mel Gibson directed it."

It is that sense of answering to no one that Rogen exemplified in his hosting, and independent filmmaking embraces with its craft. "The Artist" dominated the night, taking four awards. For a complete list of winners, click here.
