The Chatwal, Luxury 'Non-Profit' Hotel, Evaded Taxes With Church Status

Luxury 'Non-Profit' Hotel Costing City Millions With Bogus Church Status

A luxury hotel has been evading millions of dollars in unpaid taxes by clinging onto the building's former church status.

The Chatwal, located on 44th Street near Times Square, has been hiding behind the tax exemption scheme for the past five years and charging guests upwards of $500 a night for ritzy suites.

According to The New York Post, owner Sant Singh Chatwal's failure to report the building was no longer being utilized as a non-profit is costing the city $2 million, with the hotel saving $1.2 million in 2011 alone.

The self-professed "exacting example of deco modernism" hotel also boasts luxury amenities including 42-inch plasma screens, meals by fancy chef Geoffrey Zakarian, and two plunge pools for spa-goers.
