Advice To My Younger Self: Thoughts On Career

Advice To My Younger Self: Thoughts On Career

Welcome to the first installment of "Advice To My Younger Self." Readers at Huff/Post50 have a lot of life lessons under their belts, and we wanted to give your wisdom a wider platform. So every week we'll ask you to tell us the advice you'd give your younger self on topics ranging from health to parenting, education to relationships, life balance to money.

Maybe you're someone who looks on youthful missteps with acceptance, and is eager to help others avoid the same pitfalls. Or maybe this exercise inspires a bit of regret. But think of it this way -- your perspective and insights could change someone's life for the better.

This week, the focus is career.

What would I tell my younger self on this topic? A few things: Work less on doing every task to perfection and more on developing relationships with the people who are sharing the task. Trust your heart's desire and don't be afraid to follow a path when you have no idea where it's going. It mostly works out in the end. (And though it wasn't much fun at the time, your older self really appreciates your decision to start setting aside money from your paycheck for retirement when you were 23.)

Check out our slideshow to view the advice our readers would give to their younger selves about career and see the instructions below the slideshow to contribute to next week's installment: Advice to My Younger Self On Life Balance.
