'Fashion Star': Ego Gets In The Way Of One Designer's Dream

NBC kicked off their newest and one of their most ambitious reality competition projects with a super-sized installment of "Fashion Star" (Tue., 9:30 p.m. ET on NBC). And for added value on the night, one of their mentors, Jessica Simpson, was a special guest on "The Biggest Loser" as well. But it was on "Fashion Star" that Simpson took center stage alongside fellow mentors Nicole Richie and John Varvatos.

Hosted by Elle MacPherson, the show is a blend of "Shark Tank" and "Project Runway" with an eye toward modern consumerism. For the first time, the winning designs of the night may just be available on store shelves the next day. While the mentors have the power to save designers, it's the buyers who have the power to send them home.

Those buyers represent Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M. And it is they who decided which designs will be available in their stores the next day by making an offer after seeing them on the runway. There are so many exciting and fun elements to the show, it keeps the tension high from the first step on the runway to the final elimination.

This week, there were fourteen designers, but only six of them got offers from the buyers. Of the other eight, three were selected by those buyers into the bottom three. From that group, the mentors chose to save Oscar Fierro, an entertaining figure who failed to impress with his butterfly dress.

But the decision was made almost too easy for them as to who to eliminate. From the moment he appeared on camera, Nicholas Bowes was clearly too arrogant to exist in a competition. He doesn't take feedback well, instead insisting that naysayers must not know fashion. Plus, it was probably not a good idea to say that women can't really comment on men's fashion. Does he not understand who dominates that industry?

By the end of the season, the ultimate winner will have amassed hopefully an entire collection. And it will be featured in all three stores for a total prize value of $6,000,000. Certainly an exciting and worthy prize, considering their items are guaranteed for sale in such major retailers.

"Fashion Star" settles into its regular 10 p.m. ET time slot starting with next week's installment on NBC.
