Robert Matthew Van Winkle, best known by his stage name Vanilla Ice, says he has learned to love his hit song "Ice Ice Baby." But more importantly, he has learned to love himself.
"Everyone knows that song and the Ninja Rap," said Van Winkle, now 44. "Hey, our generation is running the entire world. I guarantee you Obama knows the Ninja Rap."
But the rapper alter ego that made "Ninja Rap" famous wasn't always something Van Winkle could be proud of.
"I hated myself, I hated the image," he said.
Now, after undergoing what he says were thousands of dollars of therapy, Van Winkle says he's excited about the adventures ahead.
"[When] I was 16, it was hard to get over that hurdle about, what's my purpose in life, where do I fit in? Think of Britney: she shaves her head, she goes crazy, she acts like a nut," he said. "When you are 16, you don't know anything about life anyway. You are given all this fame, all this money and you are flown around the world. You are a puppet and at some point you have to realize there are no more strings."
