'Missing': Ashley Judd Plays Worried Mother Who Kicks Butt In Search For Her Son (VIDEO)

Ashley Judd Plays Worried Mother Who Kicks Butt On 'Missing' Premiere

Ashley Judd takes center stage in the latest entry in the season's batch of mid-season short run shows. "Missing" (Thu., 8 p.m. ET on ABC) tells the story of single mother Rebecca Winstone (Judd) on a quest in Europe to find her son who's gone missing. She's a single mother because ten years ago while traveling abroad with their son, her husband Paul (Sean Bean) was killed in a vehicle explosion.

Bean is listed as a series regular, though, so it was either a fake-out for the pilot to make his death a bigger shock, or perhaps he didn't die after all. A third possibility has the show relying heavily on flashbacks, during which Bean could appear.

The explosive death seemed random until it was later revealed that there is more to the Winstones than first appears. Viewers knew Rebecca was in great shape, but it wasn't until she took down an armed assailant in her son's apartment in Italy that they saw just how capable she is.

It turns out Rebecca is an ex-CIA agent. She retired after her husband's death and never told her son about her prior career. While searching for him, Rebecca hooked up with an old friend who helped her out a bit, and was captured by the CIA, albeit temporarily.

In the end, though, she was shot and left presumed dead or dying in a river when the credits rolled at the end of this first hour, reminiscent of the classic old adventure serials they used to show in the theaters. How will she get out of this one? Or more likely, who will get her out of this one? Paul?

The ten-episode season of "Missing" continues Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
