WASHINGTON -- It wasn't until the end of his speech about Republicans wanting to gut Medicare, but Vice President Joe Biden still found a way to take a shot at Mitt Romney with an Etch a Sketch joke during a Friday campaign event.
"There is no daylight between Gov. Romney and Republican leaders on the most important issues facing this country. And not even Romney's Etch A Sketch can change that. You're not going to be able to do that," Biden told a crowd of seniors, to laughs, during the event in Coconut Creek, Fla. "He might be able to buy a new one, but he can't do it."
Romney has been trying to distance himself from a comment that his strategist Eric Fehrnstrom made Wednesday about Romney's positions being as erasable as an Etch a Sketch.
The morning after a big win in the Illinois primary, Fehrnstrom said, "Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It's almost like an Etch a Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again." The comments have only fueled a perception that the former Massachusetts governor switches positions on issues for political expediency.
Romney defended Fehrnstrom on Thursday, saying he was talking about starting over in a campaign amid the transition from a primary to the general election. Still, he acknowledged Ferhnstrom made a mistake.
"Everybody’s going to make a gaffe now and again. I’ve certainly made my share of them, and I’m sure others will. The other candidates have as well," he said Thursday during an interview with conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt.
