Google's doodle on March 23 was a work of art fitting for Spanish cubist painter Juan Gris' 125th birthday.
Gris was born in Madrid on March 23, 1887, and is best known for his contributions as the third Musketeer of Cubism, following in the footsteps of artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
The UK's Metro reported that Gris' portrait of the famous Pablo Picasso "is widely thought to be the first piece of cubist art ever that wasn't painted by Picasso or Frenchman Georges Braque."
In celebration of his achievements and to pay homage to his works, Google's warmly colorful doodle gracefully meshes together a few of Gris' greatest works, according to the Washington Post's Comic Riffs.
"There, resonating with harmonious hues, balance and counterbalance, interlocking tone and pattern," writes the Washington Post's Michael Cavna, " is an arrangement that knowledgeably nods to the interplay with such Gris works as 'Violin and Glass 1,' 'Bol et Livre,' 'Guitar With Clarinet' and 'The Book of Music.'"
Even in Google's nod of a doodle to the late and great artist, one can see how the talented Gris might have been set apart from other painters. In the wise words of art critic Maurice Raynal:
The work of Juan Gris, replete with modesty, respectability, if you will, instantly touches the special nerve-endings of those spectators who, most purely and most zealously artists rather than painters, demand from the severe control of a picture nourishment for a more exigeant, a more balanced sensibility, one less fictive and less impetuous.
