Dermot Mulroney is the latest love interest "New Girl" has brought in to woo Zooey Deschannel's character Jess. Mulroney plays a wealthy older banker named Russell Schiller, whose daughter is Jess's student. And as Mulroney told "Good Day LA," (weekdays, 9 a.m. PT on Fox) his character's age and socioeconomic status have thus far prevented him from fully integrating into the gang.
"Well I think they did the best they could to incorporate me into their group, but I was more of a radical splinter group to that core," he quipped.
Mulroney praised the quality of the show's production. "It's a unique experience, in particular how they shoot this show ... It's a single camera sitcom, so you go outside and see wind blowing their hair, so it's real. So it has that other quality," he said. When Jillian Reynolds brought up a "Friends" guest spot he made years ago, Mulroney contrasted the different styles. "That of course [was] on a stage with an audience," he noted.
The approach "New Girl" takes more time to shoot a scene, Steve Edwards observed, something Mulroney is fine with. "I love what I do, I'd rather work than sleep most of the time anyway."
