L Train Murder: NYPD Identifies Suspect, Ryan Beauchamp, Through Occupy Wall Street Arrest [UPDATE] (VIDEO)

[UPDATE] Ryan Beauchamp has been arrested in connection with the death of Joshua Basin. Cops spotted him on Bushwick Avenue in Bushwick at 2PM Tuesday, The Daily News reports. Charges are still pending.

Police have identified a suspect involved in a fight that left 20-year-old college student pinned between a Manhattan-bound L train and the Bedford Avenue platform.

The NYPD is now searching for 33-year-old Ryan Beauchamp in connection with the death of Joshua Basin, NBC New York reports. Witnesses, according to police, say Beauchamp was drunk and instigated a fight with Basin aboard the L train that spilled onto the platform and then onto the tracks Friday night. Beauchamp was able to climb out of the tracks back onto the platform before fleeing, while Basin couldn't make it out in time and was struck by the train.

After surveillance cameras outside the station captured the perp fleeing the scene (see video below), police were able to identify Beauchamp, who is homeless, through a previous arrest at Occupy Wall Street on October 8th. He also has a previous arrest in Connecticut and an NYPD source tells The Village Voice he was also once picked up for sleeping in Central Park after it closed.

It's unclear what part Beauchamp played in the Occupy movement. The homeless and mentally ill often took up residence in Zuccotti Park before Occupy was evicted, taking advantage of free shelter and food. Some reports even indicated that the NYPD was intentionally sending the city's vagrants to the park in order to derail the movement.

Basin was a psychology student at LaGuardia Community College in Queens. His mother Zena Basin remembered her son as a good listener. "Whenever his friends had a problem, he was always there for them,” Ms. Basin said told The New York Times. “And he was always there for me."

“I need justice for him,” she told CBS. “I need whoever did this to be caught.”

At the subway station Saturday morning, someone had laid a bouquet of flowers on the tracks.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of Ryan Beauchamp is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted online here.
