Chicago Downtown Sound Lineup 2012: Charles Bradley Among Partial Lineup (VIDEOS)

Partial Downtown Sound Lineup Unveiled

The city of Chicago last week announced the preliminary lineup for its annual Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays series of free concerts at Millennium Park.

The series is slated to kick off with Chicago's own singer-songwriter Kelly Hogan on Monday, May 28. The city also announced that Jonathan Richman (June 4), Chico Trujillo (June 25) and Charles Bradley (July 11) will play concerts over the course of the series, which runs through July 30. All shows begin at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays.

The city said in a statement that a full lineup will be released in mid-April. Meanwhile, it has also announced partial lineups for its Loops And Variations electronic music series, the Grant Park Music Festival and the Made In Chicago: World Class Jazz series.

The partial lineup comes on the heels of speculation over perceived delays in the city organizing and booking talent for this year's Millennium Park concerts. Last year, a full Downtown Sound lineup -- including Blonde Redhead, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Iron & Wine, Ted Leo and Low -- was announced by late March.

Michelle Boone, the city'c commissioner of its Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, a department merged last year under then-mayor Richard M. Daley, confirmed to the Chicago Tribune last month that Downtown Sound and other programs were not on the chopping block as some feared -- though the popular Music Without Borders program will not return this year.
