An unfolding Mega Millions saga in Maryland has taken a new turn as Mirlande Wilson, a McDonald's employee who claimed she had a winning ticket, now says that she hid the paper somewhere inside the fast food restaurant, the New York Post reports.
Controversy erupted over the weekend when Wilson, 37, claimed that she had one of the three winning tickets in last Friday's multi-state Mega Millions lottery, a prize that would have earned her an lump-sum payout of $105 million after taxes, the New York Post reported on Monday.
But when her McDonald's coworkers saw Wilson on the local news, they came forward and said that she purchased the ticket as part of a 15-person pool where each member paid $5 dollars and agreed to split the winnings, according to Fox News.
Now Wilson, who has not yet substantiated her claim by producing the winning ticket, says the ticket is hidden in the McDonald's where she works, the Post reports.
"I left my ticket there and it's somewhere safe that only I know about. I'm waiting for things to calm down so I can go back to McDonald’s and get it. The people [at McDonald’s] are too excited. I want their heads to cool down before I go back," Wilson told the Post.
The claim is the latest in a series of conflicting reports that Wilson--a Haitian immigrant and mother of seven--has given news outlets about the ticket.
According to WPTV News, Wilson said she purchased the ticket at a 7-Eleven store near her job for herself alone.
But when pressed for details by reporters, Wilson changed her story and said that a coworker purchased the tickets on her behalf.
"Yeah, he went to get it for me because I never usually go myself," Wilson told WPTV News.
Wilson's manager at McDonald's and fellow employees have told the New York Post that they don't believe any of Wilson's claims.
"I don’t believe her. I didn’t believe her from the beginning, she’s always been strange," an employee told the Post on the condition of anonymity. "She’s an attention seeker. She likes to have all the attention on herself."
