Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) said Wednesday morning that her U.S. Senate campaign brought in more than $2 million in the first quarter of 2012 fundraising. The campaign now has $2.8 million cash on hand. More than 24,200 people donated.
"This tremendous outpouring of support for our campaign to fight for the middle class and stand up to the powerful special interests is humbling and invigorating," Baldwin said in a statement. "Thanks to the generous gifts of thousands, our campaign will continue to take our message directly to the people of Wisconsin. This strong showing of support is just another sign of the incredible enthusiasm that is energizing our movement to fight for Wisconsin families."
Baldwin first shared her fundraising figure with her supporters on Twitter.
State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald (R-Horicon), hedge fund manager Eric Hovde, former congressman Mark Neumann and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson are competing for the GOP nomination to face Baldwin in the Senate election.
Neumann said Tuesday that he raised $650,000. The other candidates have not released financials.
The congresswoman's first quarter fundraising put her on par with Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who raised $2.3 million. Baldwin outraised Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), who, like McCaskill, is campaigning for reelection. Stabenow brought in $1.5 million during the first three months of 2012. Harvard Law professor Elizabeth Warren brought in $6.9 million in the first quarter for her U.S. senate bid in Massachusetts, the largest quarterly haul of the election cycle for a non-presidential candidate.
