Google on Sunday replaced the logo on its search engine homepage with a blossoming animation in honor of Earth Day 2012.
Visitors to Google.com will see, in place of the usual company logo, a patch of garden fashioned to spell out "GOOGLE." As you watch, the green letters bloom with purple, yellow, red and white flowers.
According to a post on the Google Blog, the doodle was created by the Google Green Team at the company's campus. "We planted seeds on a balcony at our Mountain View headquarters and watched them grow into what you see today," wrote Green Team member Erin Reilly.
Google is also promoting an Earth Day initiative encouraging people to plant their own gardens. A special landing page directs users to an interactive map that shows community gardens across the United States, a Google Offer for discounted garden seeds and more.
April 22 marks the 42nd anniversary of the first Earth Day, a global day meant to celebrate the planet and draw attention to a variety of environmental causes. From the Earth Day Network's website:
The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed.
