Sonia Rykiel Reveals She's Suffered From Parkinson’s Disease For 15 Years

Sonia Rykiel has Parkinson's disease, she reveals in a new book. According to Women's Wear Daily, the French designer finally discusses her illness in "N’oubliez Pas Que Je Joue" (“Don’t Forget It’s A Game”) after 15 years of silence as her symptoms are becoming more visible.

In the new tome, the 81-year-old designer writes, "I don’t want to show my pain. I resisted, I hesitated, I tried to be invisible, to pretend that nothing was wrong. It’s impossible, it’s not like me,” according to WWD.

The book, co-written by French journalist Judith Perrignon, will shed light on the secret despite Rykiel's long-held resistance. As Perrignon writes (and we roughly translated), "I force [open] the door quietly of her memories, I am interfering between her and her character [...] It's time to tell her secret, to explain what prevents it, why she trembles and hides. All her life, she played with the truth, she can not speak for it. That is why I'm here."

Even then, throughout Rykiel's book, the designer refers to the disease as "P de P," or "Putain de Parkinson" (in English, "bitch of Parkinson's"), says the Telegraph.

"N’oubliez Pas Que Je Joue," published by French publishing house Iconoclaste, is out now. You can read more details at WWD.com.
