History Colorado Center Opens April 28; Peek Inside The Brand New Building (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Colorado's brand new $110 million History Colorado Center will hold a public grand opening celebration Saturday, April 28, and you're invited!

The 200,000 square foot building, expected to attain LEED Gold certification, was designed by Denver architect David Tryba. “I wanted the museum to be open and welcoming,” Tryba told the Architectural Record. “Museums shouldn’t be the stuffy old places we experienced in our childhood.”

Of all the adjectives you could use to describe the new museum, "stuffy" is not one. 9News reports the atrium floor is a relief map of the entire state; Colorado's mountains, rivers, etc. are all included.

Other more lively exhibits sprinkled throughout the building include a bit on Tim McKernan, the renowned Broncos "Barrel Man", Mike the "Headless Wonder Chicken", and the annual Colorado-Texas Tomato War.

Opening day activities begin at 10:30 a.m. and include special programming, live performances, crafts and "other surprises." Tickets can be purchased online ahead of time for between $6.00-10.00; free admission for children under 5.
