'Who Do You Think You Are?': Rashida Jones, 'Parks And Rec' Star, Digs Up Sad Family Past (VIDEO)

'Who Do You Think You Are?' Sneak Peek: Rashida Jones' Sad Family Past

"Parks and Recreation" funny lady Rashida Jones is taking on a more serious role: Tracing her family's roots on "Who Do You Think You Are?" (Fri., May 4, 8 p.m. ET on NBC).

Jones, the daughter of legendary music producer Quincy Jones and actress Peggy Lipton, identifies with both her African American and Jewish heritage, but didn't know much about her mother's side of the family until doing this show.

Researching her family tree takes her from Manhattan to Ireland and then to Latvia in Eastern Europe with her mom in tow -- our exclusive sneak peek of their visit there (above) is truly touching.

"When I began this journey, I was hoping to find out more about my grandmother, Rita, and I'm astonished by how much more I've learned about my mother's side of the family," Jones says. "As difficult as it's been, I'm grateful to share these stories with my mother, and that the two of us can now visit this memorial and pay our respects to our family."

"Who Do You Think You Are?" airs on Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
