Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) sounded off on the weekend's European elections, in which voters in Greece and France rejected politicians pushing austerity measures to solve Europe's debt crisis.
"What I do find interesting is that France has elected an openly socialist individual as President, first since [Francois] Mitterand in 1988," he wrote on Facebook. "In reading his platform rhetoric it sounded quite familiar to that which we are hearing in America."
Hollande's platform, however, is far to the left of Democrats. On taxing the rich, Hollande has campaigned on a 75 percent tax on earnings over one million Euros--Democrats, by contrast, in proposing the Buffett Rule, want millionaires to pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes. He also calls for rolling back the retirement age from 62 to 60 for some workers, whereas some Democrats have expressed support in raising the retirement age up from 65. He also favors legalizing euthanasia and gay marriage, which remain flashpoint issues in the Democratic party.
"The weekends [sic] election events in Greece and France could be quite telling for Europe's financial situation as well as our own," wrote West.
