Fans of Kaluga caviar had to think twice about their favored delicacy after watching the latest episode of "River Monsters" (Sun., 10 p.m. ET on Animal Planet). Jeremy Wade headed for the waters of Russia to track down a predatory monster that turned out to most likely be this famous fish. The Kaluba is a behemoth, growing to lengths of 15 feet, but it's also incredibly valuable and now nearly extinct.
Wade watched as police boats chased down poachers, and learned that organized crime is now dominating the Kaluga fishing trade. After all, one Kaluga sturgeon brings in as much money as a salmon fisherman makes in more than three years of hard work. No wonder things have gotten so ruthless. It's like a gold rush underwater.
Wade was able to finally get his hands on a Kaluga, and more optimistically, he found a baby one as well. Things aren't going great for the animal, but they're not done fighting for survival just yet.
