An after-school tutoring session allegedly turned into a sexual encounter between a 16-year-old male student and his 26-year-old teacher, who is accused of multiple encounters with the boy.
New Jersey Police arrested Kristin Leone late Monday afternoon for her alleged relations with a Clifton High School student, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office in a statement.
“She’s 26. He’s 16,” Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said, according to The Record. “He is her student and a subordinate to her, so while there’s no evidence that she coerced him or forced him physically, legally he cannot consent.”
Authorities launched an investigation after administrators with the high school reported the case on May 7. Detectives found the student-teacher couple had two sexual encounters, first during an after-school tutoring session and again at the teacher's home. The initial incident involved intimate touching, while the second progressed to sexual intercourse, according to the prosecutor's statement.
Leone is charged with sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of criminal sexual contact, luring and enticing a child, and two counts of official misconduct.
“We want every parent and student to know that we will continue to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students at Clifton High School and all of the schools throughout the district,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Tardalo said in a statement, according to CBS New York.
In 2010, the school's former principal was accused of exposing himself to the mother of a special needs student visiting for a meeting about her child. In addition, at least three female students have claimed during the past year that they were raped or sexually assaulted by other students on the Clifton High School campus, the CBS station also reported.
Police released the Leone late Monday night on $100,000 bond. She faces 10 years in prison if convicted.
The investigation is considered ongoing.
