Mike Shum's 'Mother's Day Breakfast In Bed' Highlights Human Aspects Of Colorado Civil Unions Bill (VIDEO)

Even as Colorado's Speaker of the House Frank McNulty assigned a much-anticipated civil unions bill to a "kill" committee, designed to halt the bill from moving to a floor vote where it would likely pass, supporters held out hope.

The legislation died Monday, one day after Mother's Day -- a fact that was not lost on Denver filmmaker Mike Shum. Shum released "Mother's Day Breakfast in Bed" Sunday, a short film highlighting the human aspects of same-sex relationships.

The film opens with a standard Mother's Day scene: child cooking breakfast in bed for a mom waiting, somewhere, off-camera. Behind the smiling child, the backdrop of a messy kitchen, an adult offering help now and then, but only when necessary. As the son serves breakfast to an eager mom, the camera pans back to reveal two moms. Happy Mother's day, indeed.
