State House Approves Education Budget $1.4 Billion For Public Universities, $12.9 Billion For K-12

LANSING -- State House lawmakers completed work on the state's 2012-13 budget Friday, adopting a $1.4-billion spending plan for public universities, $12.9 billion for K-12 education and $294 million for community colleges.

The omnibus education bill contains modest spending hikes over the current year and incentives and mandates cooked up by Gov. Rick Snyder and Republicans in the Legislature to, they hope, boost student performance and contain costs. The K-12 plan also provides more money to close the spending gap between school districts.

The budget passed on a mostly party-line vote of 58-51.
