Maryland Tornadoes 2012: 10 Twisters Touched Down From Friday's Severe Storms

At Least 10 Tornadoes Touch Down In Maryland

WASHINGTON -- The National Weather Service confirmed that at least 10 tornadoes touched down in Maryland as a result of Friday's severe weather system that pushed through the D.C. and Baltimore area, WJZ reports.

Fortunately, the confirmed tornadoes -- in Montgomery, Prince George's, Howard, Harford, Queen Anne's and Carroll counties -- had relatively weak EF-0 and EF-1 Fujita tornado intensity ratings. But even those relatively weak storms can still create significant damage in limited areas. Damage in Harford County, where an EF-1 tornado touched down, is estimated to be around $1 million.

There were no reports of deaths and only a handful of injuries, including a man at an auto repair shop in Fallston, Md., who suffered broken bones when a concrete wall collapsed.

Three more tornadoes, in Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Carroll counties, still have to be classified, according to the television station.

Damage is still being assessed from Friday's storms, according to WJLA-TV.

The last catastrophic tornado to hit the D.C. area was a F-4 twister that plowed through La Plata, Md., and other areas in Charles and Calvert counties in 2002. That tornado caused more than $100 million in damage and killed five people.
