A south suburban Chicago man was charged Friday with murder in the apparent shaking death of his 4-month-old daughter.
Jonathan Ortiz, 23, of South Chicago Heights, was charged after it was determined that 4-month-old Sophia Ortiz had died from injuries related to child abuse -- specifically shaken baby syndrome, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Police say Sophia was left in Ortiz's care Saturday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune. Around 3 a.m. Monday, Ortiz called 911 to report that his infant daughter was not breathing.
Paramedics took Sophia to St. James Hospital, where staff were able to revive her, but she remained unable to breath on her own, the Tribune reports. She was then airlifted to Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, where she remained on life support until her death Tuesday evening.
The Department of Children and Family Services investigated the infant's death, which was ruled a homicide Thursday, ABC Chicago reported.
Ortiz is slated to appear in bond court Saturday.
