U Street Construction To Cause Big Headaches Into 2013

WASHINGTON -- With streetscaping work nearly complete on 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan, construction crews will start reshaping a new busy corridor: U Street from 9th to 14th streets NW.

On Monday, the District of Columbia's Department of Transportation will begin construction to "improve and landscape the sidewalk areas, repair the roadway, and perform upgrades to the streetlights, traffic signals and storm drains," according to the project website.

The U Street work will begin at 9th Street and over the next year push westward to 14th Street. The work is expected to be complete by spring 2013.

Like in Adams Morgan, where pedestrians now enjoy wider sidewalks, U Street's sidewalks will be improved as well.

Greater Greater Washington previewed the U Street work in 2011, when the construction was supposed to start that fall, saying that the streetscaping "will fix many of the worst pedestrian problems with this street."

The sidewalk outside the Lincoln Theater will see decorative pavement when the construction is complete.
