Reclusive Director Spotted In Wild

Terrence Malick is rarely spotted out in public -- and when he is spotted out in public, it's usually with his trusty safari hat -- but the reclusive director was videotaped by TMZ-paid paparazzi on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

The only problem? TMZ didn't actually realize it had Malick on video -- the gossip site was too focused on Malick's companion, actor Benicio Del Toro, to notice.

Malick -- thrice nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, including this year for "The Tree of Life" -- isn't actually working with Del Toro, meaning he might be the only actor not participating in one of Malick's two currently filming projects: "Knight of Cups" and an untitled film previously called "Lawless." Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and Rooney Mara are among the actors appearing in those films.

The director notoriously takes a lot of time between his films, but he's on a bit of a roll following "Tree of Life": in addition to "Cups" and the untitled feature, there's also "To The Wonder" with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem coming soon as well. That film could hit theaters as early as this year.

Watch the TMZ clip of Malick above and pay attention to how fast he turns away from the camera at the 12-second mark.
