Mother Cat Takes Bullet For Her Kittens, Saves Her Litter

Heroic Cat Takes Bullet For Kittens

They say a mother would do anything for her children.

For proof, look no further than Cindy, a mother cat who literally took a bullet for her kittens, reports Carlsbad Patch.

The mother and kittens were found abandoned and taken to Helen Woodward Animal Center in Sante Fe, Ca., where a veterinarian removed a BB bullet from Cindy's head, according to the Examiner.

When Cindy first arrived, she didn't want to leave her newborn kittens.

“Mommy and baby kitties are all doing fine, but it was touch and go when they first arrived,” Dr. Oba, the veterinarian tending to Cindy, told the Carlsbad Patch. “They were all very tiny, malnourished, unvaccinated and very scared. It took a gentle hand to pull that momma away from her babies.”

After taking Cindy into surgery, Dr. Oba discovered the reason for their behavior. The cat and her litter had been shot at and Cindy had taken the bullet.

Cindy and her kittens are currently recovering and will be available for adoption via the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

While Cindy's story is certainly impressive, it bears similarities to another incident involving a brave mother cat. Back in 1996, a calico reportedly raced into a burning building in Brooklyn to save each of her five kittens.

Like Cindy, Scarlett and her newborn kittens made headlines around the world.
