Growing up, Edwin Moses devoured biology, math and anatomy books, collected fossils and conducted science experiments—but he wasn't particularly athletic.

"Education was the top priority in my family, so I spent a lot of time with my head in a book," says Mr. Moses, adding that he was a "tiny kid with braces and glasses, so I got beat up a lot." But in high school, Mr. Moses discovered he was a fast runner. "I was small but had long legs, so I went out for track and field."
