July 4th Outfits: How To Picnic In Style (PHOTOS)

As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day, many of us are thinking about what to bring to the annual picnic: Rosé or white? Fudge brownies or apple pie? Along with deliberating on what to prepare, you should also think carefully about what to wear.

Here's why: The weather will undoubtedly be scorching, ketchup spots and grass stains will be inevitable, and most importantly, you're going to have to sit on the ground at some point, so full coverage whilst seated is necessary.

There is also the color palette to consider. Red, white and blue is cute, but if you're not one to wear the stars and stripes, don't worry: The look can be achieved just as easily with white cropped pants, a navy striped tee and a red scarf in your hair (red sunnies will also do the trick). If it's too hot for pants, opt for shorts.

While we prefer pants, since sitting cross-legged on a picnic blanket can be awkward in a frock, 'tis the season for sundresses. If you do go for a dress, choose something sweet in gingham, pastels or polka-dots. We love this season's '50s-inspired styles with their cinched waists and full skirts. One bit of advice, though: Find a bench. No one wants to show off "Paris, France" on our national holiday.
