Caroline Bartley, University Of Mississippi Student, Dies In Plane Crash With Family

A student at University of Mississippi and her parents are reported dead after a thunderstorm downed their plane around 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Caroline Bartley, 20, was in the Piper PA-32 plane along with her father Dr. James Bartley, 55, and her mother Terry Bartley, also 55. They were flying from their vacation home near Andrews, N.C., to Oxford, Miss. where Ole Miss is located.

The plane crashed 35 miles northeast of Tulepo, Miss. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash to determine cause.

Caroline was studying biology at Ole Miss, and was a member of the sorority Alpha Omicron Pi. She was listed as a sophomore last spring.

Dean of Students Dr. Thomas Reardon addressed Bartley's death.

"We as a university are devastated any time we lose a student, faculty members, staff members (and) friends to the university-especially when it's a student,” he said. “ It hits hard, and we'll give all the support we can to her family and friends, and they'll remain in our thoughts and prayers."

The Bartleys were from Columbus, Ga. They are survived by Caroline's two older siblings, Sherry and Christen.
