Animal Photos Of The Week

Baby Lions, Panthers, Gorillas And Other Animal Photos Of The Week

This week saw several heartwarming baby animal rescues. In Spain, a photographer captured a mother elephant saving her month-old calf from the mud. In Australia, an orphaned baby koala was returned to the wild after he was nursed back to health at an animal hospital. Crescent Head Jimmy had been brought to the hospital after his mother was killed by a car in 2009.

It was revealed this week that climate change and decreasing snow cover could have an impact on wolverines' eating habits. LiveScience reports that according to researchers, "wolverines use snow like a refrigerator to preserve food during the lean, cold times after their young are born."

This week also saw good news for fans of Bob Marley. A parasitic crustacean found only in the Caribbean has been named Gnathia marleyi in honor of the late musician. Paul Sikkel, an assistant professor of marine ecology at Arkansas State University, said in a statement, "I named this species, which is truly a natural wonder, after Marley because of my respect and admiration for Marley's music." He added, "Plus, this species is as uniquely Caribbean as was Marley."

Sadly, it was revealed that over 500 dead penguins have washed up on beaches in southern Brazil in the past week. Marine biologists and veterinarians expect to know the cause of death in about a month, reported AP.
