Jon Hamm & Jay-Z: When Don Draper Met Hova On An Elevator

When Jon Hamm Rode The Elevator With Jay-Z

Jon Jay is the name of an outfielder on the St. Louis Cardinals. It's also the source of your newest bit of fanfic: There was a time in the recent past when Jon Hamm rode an elevator with Jay-Z.

Hamm, doing the press rounds for his work in "Friends With Kids" (on DVD and Blu-ray now), spoke with A.V. Club for the site's "Random Rules" feature, which asks celebrities what songs are on their iTunes shuffle. When Jay-Z's "What More Can I Say" came on, Hamm recalled meeting Jay-Z in an elevator.

I was in New York City and going down an elevator when the elevator stopped, and Jay-Z got on. This was a long time ago. It was pre-Beyoncé. And definitely pre-Mad Men. It’s weird, because he’s a big dude, too. He’s a fairly tall guy, and it’s kind of like, “Hey, wow, I know you.” And I think I was probably super nervous and nerdy and said something like, “I’m a big fan of your work.” And he was very polite. And then we rode the elevator down the rest of the way, and then he got out and walked to the curb and got in a powder blue Bentley. And I walked to the corner and got on the subway.

So, that's just the best story and yet another example of Jon Hamm being totally awesome and down to earth. The actor exhibit similar traits in a recent interview with HuffPost Entertainment when the subject of Kristen Wiig's finale "Saturday Night Live" episode was broached. (Hamm appeared on the episode, and has co-starred with Wiig in "Bridesmaids" and "Friends With Kids.")

"It was sad and funny and exciting and all of the things that 'SNL,' at its best, can be," Hamm said. "And in addition, it was sort of sweet and wistful, which 'SNL' is sort of not really known for. It was a nice tribute by a lot of talented people thanking one of their own. It was a pretty cool thing."

All of which is to say: Hamm. Jay Pharoah as Jay-Z. Make it happen, next season of "Saturday Night Live."
